This book represents a different aspect of the history of a small town compared to most other history books. Over the years, I’ve learned a lot about the history of New Haven by collecting bits and pieces of the local advertising. New Haven, originally known as Millers Landing was founded by Phillip Miller in 1836. As the town grew with the influx of settlers, the demand for food, household furnishings and other goods grew too. Many entrepreneurs started businesses that catered to the needs of the people. Advertising was a necessary tool to help these shop keepers make their business known to the public. This book does not intend to be a price guide or complete list of all advertising items ever created in New Haven. Unfortunately many items have disappeared over the years, leaving no trace of their existence. The goal of this book is to create a comprehensive directory of all forms of surviving advertising from businesses and organizations originated in New Haven, for historical reference only. Although some items may actually be from businesses in other towns, they have been included because they have had or plan to have a significant impact on the New Haven community. This is an ongoing project and will continue to grow throughout the years as more items are found and added to later editions. To the best of my knowledge, there has never been a documented illustrated directory of advertising dedicated to a specific town. I hope that you enjoy looking at the contents gathered by myself and many others, who share my interest. It may stir up a fond memory of a Christmas past when you received a small token of thanks from a business regularly patronized. I also hope that this book will raise awareness in this and other communities to follow suit in preserving their rich and colorful advertising history.
